Wall Ball Drills

What better way for young athletes of any level to get ready for the season than playing wall ball. All they need to start is a brick or concrete wall — with no nearby windows. Two favorite spots in Plymouth are the outdoor walls by the gyms at PCIS and PSMS. These simple routines help build the fundamentals of throwing overhand and catching in the box:

2 Handed Catch, Cradle and Throw:

  • Stand 8-10 feet from the wall
  • Throw the ball against the wall and catch it, give it one cradle and repeat
  • Start with your right hand, do 30-50 reps without dropping the ball
  • Switch to your left and do 30-50 more without dropping the ball

Throw Right, Catch Left:

  • Stand 8-10 feet from the wall
  • Throw the ball against the wall using your right hand and switch hands to catch the ball left handed
  • Change back to your right hand and repeat
  • Do 30-50 reps without dropping the ball

Throw Left, Catch Right:

  • Same as above but throwing left and catching right

2 Handed Quick Sticks:

  • Stand 8-10 feet from the wall
  • Throw the ball against the wall using your right hand
  • Catch the ball and quickly throw it back against the wall without cradling
  • Do 30-50 reps
  • Switch to your left hand and repeat

One Handed Quick Sticks:

  • Same as 2 Handed Quick Sticks above but get closer to the wall and only use one hand
  • Do 30-50 reps
  • Switch to your left and repeat

Defensive Slides

Whenever we slide, the defender that was beat needs to recover to the hole (or the paint) to find the open player. Communication is key —everyone must be talking on D!

Crease slides are used when the offense has a man on the crease, we will slide from the crease on a string to the ball carrier that has beaten his man. Watch how

Adjacent slides are used when the offense does not have a man on the crease.  If the ball carrier beats his man to the right, the defender on the adjacent right side slides.  If the ball carrier beats his man to the left, the slide comes from the left adjacent defender. See how
